This washed AA lot comes from the Kamundu Estate in Kiambu County, near Nairobi. The region is considered one of Kenya's most traditional coffee-growing areas and is particularly known for its large coffee plantations. Many of these estates were founded in the early 20th century and have been managed by local producers and companies since Kenya's independence in the 1960s. Sasini Estate focuses on quality – sustainable practices and management are paramount. The farm also demonstrates community and social responsibility, providing housing for employees on the farms, early childhood education programs, union representation, and wages above the statutory minimum wage. Investments are also made in local educational projects, such as the Njenga Karume Primary School, where a modern computer lab has been set up.
The region around Mount Kenya offers ideal conditions for growing high-quality Arabica. Mineral soils, abundant sunshine, sufficient rainfall, and the cool temperatures of the high altitudes at around 1,950 meters ensure that the coffee cherries ripen slowly and develop a distinct complexity.
This coffee was processed using the traditional Kenyan Fully Washed method – a process that has been the foundation for the characteristic clarity and vibrancy of Kenyan coffees for generations. After careful selection, the ripe coffee cherries are de-pulped and fermented in water tanks for 12 to 48 hours to remove the remaining fruit layer. The beans are then washed in water channels. After that, the coffee dries for up to three weeks on raised African drying beds in the sun. During this time, it is regularly turned and protected from moisture and the intense midday sun.
